Greenhouse Layout and Shelving Ideas

Zones before furniture, aisle before benches, and vertical space before more floor. Three layouts drawn to real dimensions, plus the bench measurements that make a greenhouse comfortable to work in.

Start with zones, not furniture

Every working greenhouse has the same four zones, and the layout question is really how much of your floor you give to each.

  • Propagation. Bench height, close to the best light, ideally with a heat mat and a power outlet. This is where seed trays and cuttings live from late winter to late spring.
  • Cropping. Floor-level beds, large containers or grow bags for tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers - anything that needs root volume and vertical space.
  • Work. A potting surface at a comfortable height with the compost, pots and labels within arm's reach. Usually the end wall, because it needs the least light.
  • Storage. Under the benches, always. Bags of mix, spare pots, watering cans and the hose reel.

Put the work and storage zones at the north end where light is worth least, and give the south and the long sides to plants. That one decision does more for a greenhouse than any bench you can buy.

Aisle width is the constraint everything else bends around

An aisle below 24 inches is unpleasant to use once the benches are loaded and plants start leaning in. Thirty inches is comfortable. Thirty-six inches lets you get a wheelbarrow or a garden cart down the middle, which matters more than people expect on the day you fill twenty containers. On a 10 ft-wide house you can afford a 36 inch aisle with a 30 inch bench each side and still have room to spare.

Mesh tops beat solid tops for growing. Expanded metal, welded wire or slatted timber lets air move up through the pots, which dries the surface between waterings and cuts fungus gnats and damping off dramatically. Solid tops are better for a potting station, where you want the compost to stay on the bench rather than fall through it. Most greenhouses want mesh on the growing runs and one solid surface at the work end.

Materials, in order of practicality: galvanized or powder-coated steel frames with mesh tops last effectively forever in a damp environment and cost the most; ground-contact treated timber with a slatted top is the cheapest and easiest to build to your exact dimensions; plastic staging is light and cheap but sags under wet pots. Whatever you build, do not fix it to the greenhouse frame - benching that carries load into the structure is benching that fights it in wind.

Shelving ideas that add real capacity

A greenhouse is a volume, not a floor, and the cheapest expansion available is upward.

  • Tiered staging on the north side. Stepped shelves put every plant in light without any of them shading the next, and they hold three times what a flat bench of the same footprint does.
  • A narrow high shelf along the eaves for pots that tolerate heat and bright light - pelargoniums, succulents, hardening-off trays.
  • Hanging baskets from the roof purlins, but only where they will not drip on seedlings and only where the frame is rated to carry them. Water is heavy.
  • Under-bench space for storage, dormant tubers, forced rhubarb and anything that actively prefers dark - it is the most wasted real estate in most greenhouses.
  • Vertical strings or a trellis for indeterminate tomatoes and cucumbers, run from a ridge-level wire. In a 7 ft-tall house that turns a 2 sq ft container into a 12 ft crop.
  • A folding wall bench at the end wall that drops out of the way when you need floor space for tall crops in high summer.

Water, power and floor

Water. Decide before you build the benches. A tap inside the greenhouse saves a hundred trips a season; a water butt fed from the roof gives you rainwater at ambient temperature, which plants prefer to cold mains water. If you plan drip irrigation, run the header pipe along the bench frame while it is empty and accessible, not after it is loaded.

Power. Outlets belong above bench height, on an outdoor-rated, RCD-protected circuit installed to local code. Put them near the propagation zone where the heat mat and the propagator will live, and keep them away from the watering side.

Floor. A gravel or slab floor with a firm walking strip down the aisle is the practical combination. Gravel drains and lets you damp down in summer to cool the air by evaporation; a solid strip stops the aisle becoming a rut. Avoid a fully sealed floor unless you have designed drainage into it.

How to plan the layout before you buy anything

  1. Draw the real internal dimensions on paper - the exact figures from the spec table, not a rounded size.
  2. Mark north on the plan, then place the work and storage zone at the north end.
  3. Draw the aisle first at 30 to 36 inches, running door to door.
  4. Fill the remaining width with benches at 24 to 30 inches deep, and mark which runs are mesh and which are solid.
  5. Decide where ground beds go, if any, and keep them where tall crops will not shade the propagation bench.
  6. Mark power outlets above bench height and the water point before building anything.
  7. Only then buy or build the benching, to the dimensions on the drawing.

Layout and shelving questions

How wide should a greenhouse aisle be?

Thirty inches is comfortable and thirty-six inches lets you get a wheelbarrow or cart down the middle. Below twenty-four inches the aisle stops being usable once benches are loaded and plants lean in.

How high should greenhouse benches be?

Thirty to thirty-six inches for standing work, with twenty-four to thirty inches of depth against a wall - about the limit of a comfortable reach. Island benches accessible from both sides can go to forty-eight inches or more.

Should greenhouse shelves be solid or mesh?

Mesh for growing, solid for potting. Mesh lets air move up through the pots, which dries the compost surface between waterings and sharply reduces fungus gnats and damping off. Keep one solid surface at the work end for potting up.

Which end should the potting bench go?

The north end, where light is worth least. Give the south end and both long sides to plants. Storage goes under the benches, which is the most under-used space in almost every greenhouse.

Can I fix shelving to the greenhouse frame?

Better not to. Free-standing benching keeps its load off the structure, which matters in wind, and it lets you rearrange the layout without drilling the frame. Every hole drilled in galvanized steel is a spot that has to be sealed against corrosion.
